14 Notes to Consider Before Choosing the Right Franchise for You

Recently, the Franchise System (Franchising) was issued, and I wanted to share some tips for those interested in acquiring a franchise due to the many inquiries I receive on this topic.

Is Franchising Right for You?

1. Study the cost of obtaining the license

• Determine whether it is for a single branch or an entire area.

1. Analyze future competition

• Assess factors that may affect competitiveness over time.

1. Examine profit margins

• Study both gross and net profit margins, and compare them to the market average in the same field.

1. Clarify your goal

• Are you buying the franchise because of the success of the business model or the strength of the brand?
• If it’s for brand strength, check how many branches this project has.
• Avoid franchises with fewer than three branches in multiple regions.

Avoid franchises with no decision-making freedom

• Even large companies allow franchisees some flexibility, such as diversifying suppliers.
• Do not engage with franchisors that force you to buy everything exclusively from them.

Conduct your own feasibility study

• Assess your project's profitability. Sometimes, franchise royalties and purchase costs can turn you into an employee of the franchisor, working for them without a salary.

Look for proven business models

• Avoid franchises without a successful business model, operation manuals, employee training, and quality control.

Don’t be misled by sales figures from one or two branches

• Evaluate existing branches in terms of location, size, and resources before setting expectations for profits and sales.

Franchising is more secure than starting a new business

• Why? Because franchising has proven its success. Validate this point and remember: numbers don’t lie.

Review the contract with a specialist

• Do not accept unfair cancellation terms.
• Remember, you won’t lose unless you agree to unfair conditions. Reject an unfair opportunity from the start.

Make fair comparisons

• When comparing the profitability of your project to an existing branch, ensure the factors are similar (e.g., branch age, size, location, and number of staff). Don’t compare a 15-year-old branch to a new one and expect identical results.

Seek a growth-oriented opportunity

• Look for a project with growth potential, and ensure the contract terms do not limit that growth.
• Make sure you’re building a business, not simply creating a new job for yourself by managing a branch for the franchisor.

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be better equipped to make informed decisions and choose the right franchise opportunity for your goals and capabilities.
