Every great success story has passed through a phase where its owner didn’t know what to do, but that’s the part we never watched.
As the saying goes, the devil is in the details—and sometimes, success lies there too.
If you listen to enough podcast episodes, you might come away with a strange impression: that successful people always knew the way, that their decisions were clear, and that their success was the result of extraordinary intelligence or an infallible vision. But this isn't the full story; it is merely the version that remained after time edited out its harshest chapters.
After years working with family businesses, boards, and CEOs, I discovered that the most impactful moments in a company’s life are the ones no one talks about: meetings that end without a decision, plans that change at the very last minute, and nights a CEO spends awake because they don't know which decision will cause the least damage.
An investor about to pull out, a bank refusing financing, a partner thinking of leaving, and a company unsure whether to expand or preserve what’s left. These are not exceptions; they are normal life in the business world. But when a company succeeds, all these chapters disappear, and the narrator begins the story from the first win.
Here is an important reminder: do not treat everything you hear as fact. Some stories are genuine, some are incomplete, and some are embellished over time. It is not uncommon for a story to be told in a way that serves an image rather than the truth. So do not be a naive listener, and do not believe a story just because it was told with confidence in front of a camera or gained millions of views.
Even if every word in it were true, it is usually not the complete story. The toughest decisions, the hardest moments of doubt, the biggest disputes between partners, the most tense meetings, and the anxiety attacks before making a choice rarely find their way to the recording—they remain off-camera.
This is why many young people believe that a true leader never hesitates, that a successful investor never worries, and that a great CEO sees the future clearly. The truth is that the greatest decisions I have witnessed were not made when the picture was clear, but when there was no picture at all; there was only responsibility, and there was a decision to be made.
If you are building a company today, leading a family business, or managing investors' funds, do not worry if you feel confused. Confusion is not always a sign that you are on the wrong path; sometimes, it is the only proof that you have reached a level of responsibility where there are no easy answers.
Do not just search for the success story; search for the part that was left untold. It is in that hidden part that the decisions driving true success were born. And because the quality of thinking precedes the quality of results, what gets cut from the story is often more important than what remains.
